What Can I Give?

It's an underlying question throughout this time of year as we search for the right gifts for all our family and friends. But sometimes the best gifts to give are not purchased or made, as corny as I know it sounds. The #LightTheWorld church initiative brings the focus away from some of the material things of the world and towards service instead. Knowing that this was coming up, I starting thinking about things I can do with my limited resources. The first song (because music is my life) that popped into my head was What Shall We Give? here sung by the MOTABs (also they sang it today in the church Christmas Devo, so inspiration?!?).
I know that these few weeks before Christmas are going to be very busy, not just because of the season and all the parties and events I want to go to, but also because of finals and all the projects, papers, and studying... and the concerts I had this weekend. For the latter, my contribution was obvious. I gave music. But anyone who's performed knows that it involves more than just the end result. It's the time I've spent practicing, the talent that I've been given and have tried to improve, listening and following my director, the relationships I've built with my sister singers, the makeup and hair that I do for myself and others on concert days, and the joy I feel and try to share. It sounds like a lot when it's grouped all together, but even when I was there yesterday for 10 hours to prepare, practice, and perform (and have some fun) it didn't feel exhausting.

Through my thought processes I've come to the conclusion that what I can do is give of my self. My time, my spiritual gifts and talents, my joys, my comfort, my thoughts (thanks for tagging along on that one), my love and care, just me. In the most humble sense, I am a gift.
President Thomas S. Monson said, "From the treasure of our hearts Jesus asks that we give of ourselves: “Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind.”
In the church and my family life I have become familiar with making sacrifices, as well as trying to do as many good things as I can. They typically come hand-in-hand, but as I try to select the best things to do I find it feels much less like a burden. I try to put people before things. Do simple acts of service that don't take much time or energy. College has drawn me to a variety of service and self-bettering activities by offering pizza. I've had many such opportunities this year (with and without pizza) with very tangible and recognizable results. These experiences have brought me closer to my friends and family, as well as my savior, and I am so excited to have many opportunities to serve throughout my life.
I hope you will join me in taking advantage of opportunities to serve especially in this season.
